Smog Check FAQ's:

What do I need to bring with me?

Please bring your DMV renewal form.

How much does a CA Smog Check cost at Quality Tune Up Car Care Center?

CA Smog Check cost is $39.95 plus $8.25 CA certificate fee for 2000 & newer vehicles with coupon. We can’t put a one size fits all price on the smog check because every shop is different, plus 1999 and older and heavy duty vehicles are different across the board. The 2000 & newer smog checks are not $39.99 unless they have the coupon and we always have to put “plus $8.25 certificate fee” in every price quote according to the BAR for either smog check.

How long does it take for a CA Smog Check?

Depending on wait times, the test itself takes 15 minutes for model years 2000, while 1999 and older could take 45 minutes to an hour.

Do I need to make an appointment?

When your vehicle is due for a smog check, bring your vehicle into one of our convenient locations in Fremont, Milpitas, or San Jose. We can perform the smog test on your vehicle. In most cases, cars will pass the smog test. However, in some cases, a car may fail. Our shop is also authorized by the State of California to make repairs to help your vehicle eventually pass the smog test.

Smog tests determine the amounts and types of pollutants coming out of your vehicle’s tailpipe. The test involves connecting a hose to the vehicle tailpipe and then analyzing the exhaust fumes by a computer. These results are then compared against limits set by the State Air Resources Board to ensure that they meet requirements. If they don’t, then your car will not pass the test.

There are a variety of reasons a vehicle may not pass inspection. It takes a trained expert to determine the cause of a failed test. Some reasons include worn out parts, not having fresh oil and filters, malfunctioning injectors, or a faulty oxygen sensor. The best way to ensure your vehicle always passes a smog test is with proper maintenance and service every year.

California smog checks are currently required for all vehicles except for:

  • Diesel powered vehicles 1997 and older
  • Gross Vehicle Weight of more than 14,000 lbs
  • Electric, natural gas-powered cars over 14,000 lbs
  • Motorcycles or trailers
  • Gasoline powered vehicles 1975 and older
